Everyone needs hot water. No matter if it’s the summer, spring, fall or winter, hot water is a necessity. We use it to complete activities of daily living from washing our clothes and dishes, showering, brewing tea and coffee, and so much more. The thought of living without hot water is not even fathomable. With that said, though, keeping our water hot can be expensive and far from energy efficient.
This is where tankless water heaters come in.
While I was always someone who used standard water heaters, after doing some research I decided that switching to a tankless water heater was a better option. As a go-green enthusiast, I’m always looking for ways to save on energy costs, so once I learned the facts, it seemed like the only reasonable decision.
It’s crazy, but I found that every single minute of every single day, your standard water heater keeps 40 to 80 gallons of water heated to 120 degrees or even higher. This includes when you’re sleeping, on vacation, at work and not even home. This means that it’s continuously running and eating up your energy – so much so that the cost of heating water is 13% (sometimes more) of your monthly utility bill.
I don’t know about you, but 13% is a lot, especially since it’s highly unlikely that you use continuous hot water to represent this percentage. For this reason, tankless water heaters are a great alternative, especially for those who are concerned with conserving energy.
A tankless water heater, also known as an on demand water heater, can help cut down costs and conserve energy as they only provide hot water when it is needed. So, how does it work?
Well, imagine this:
It’s 6am and your obnoxious alarm clock is blaring. Yep, it’s that time again. You manage to pull yourself away from the warm covers and stumble into the bathroom, half asleep. A nice, hot shower always does the trick, doesn’t it? It wakes us up when we need it most. So, you turn on the hot water tap and get into the shower. Tankless water heaters rapidly heats cold water and hot water will continue to flow as long as you’d like. Yes, that’s right. There’s no more worrying about whether or not the water will stay warm as you shower – you won’t run out of hot water, ever, even if, on this morning, you need 45 minutes to wake yourself up. Oh…the bliss!
For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water on a daily basis, tankless water heaters can be a whopping 24-34% more energy efficient than a standard water heater, according to the US Department of Energy. Even if you use a lot of hot water, a tankless water heater can be 14% or more energy efficient. However, you can install tankless water heaters at every hot water outlet like I did and save 50%!
Sound excessive? Perhaps, but I am saving hundreds on my energy bill each year…and helping to save the environment in the process.
Tankless water heaters can cost more up front, but you will be saving more in the long run.
